The Artist
Hello I’m Vicki and I love to draw.
Drawing is quite literally in my blood, a wonderful genetic gift from my Mother. I grew up surrounded by paper, canvas, pencils and paint, with the smell of turpentine lingering in the air in my Mother’s room.
I began drawing around the age of three or four, copying my Mother’s discarded sketches and becoming increasingly frustrated that my crude efforts did not match her skill! “ Practice & patience Vicki and you will be able to draw like me one day” So practice I did and she was not wrong.
I’m often asked ‘how do you do it?” I don’t really know – there is no magic formula or secret technique, just careful observation of proportions and how one feature correlates to another. I see myself as a creative copycat with an ability to convey what I see onto paper. I am primarily self taught, although I did attend Ravensbourne College of Art in SE London and completed a Foundation in Fine Art in 1983.
I enjoy working with clients, finding out what is wanted and who the portrait will be for and learning a little about the person or pet I will be drawing so that I can bring a sense of their personality into the portrait. I work predominantly in graphite pencil but can also use watercolour and coloured pencils or an amalgamation of both. My work is very detailed and I enjoy capturing every small nuance, eyelash , whisker or freckle!
Drawing is my heart’s work and I hope this is reflected in each commission I undertake. A portrait is a very personal and unique gift and each one is created from a great love of drawing.
